Faq

why clean my tongue

WHY SHOULD I CLEAN MY TONGUE? - +

There are hundreds of tiny lines running along the surface of your tongue where harmful bacteria hide out, feeding on food leftovers and dead cells. They have the most fun multiplying while you sleep, when there is less saliva in your mouth to wash them away.

That's why you wake up with your breath smelling so...unsexy. And with a gross white coating on your tongue.

Gently removing this coating with a tongue cleaner each morning is a basic step in assisting your body’s natural detoxification processes.

I BRUSH MY TONGUE, IS THIS ENOUGH? - +

Research has shown that scraping is much more effective than a toothbrush at removing tongue bacteria.

A toothbrush mostly just moves bacteria around on your tongue, instead of scraping it off.

Mouthwashes usually contain alcohol which mask breath for a short time, but then the alcohol dries out your mouth leading to worse breath. Some recent research suggests it can also kill off some of the good microbes hanging out in your mouth.

AREN'T THERE GOOD BACTERIA IN THE MOUTH? - +

Yes. Our oral microbiome is made up of good and bad bacteria. But an overgrowth of bad bacteria occurs when the mouth is dry.

OK so when is our mouth dry? When you smoke, drink alcohol, take certain medications, breath through the mouth a lot (eg while exercising) and...while we sleep!

This is why you tongue scrape once a day in the morning: because there is an accumulation of bad bacteria that grows on your tongue during the night when you have dry mouth - throwing the delicate balance between bad and good bacteria out of whack. Your body alerts you to this fact through.. your morning breath! All you have to do is listen :)

WHAT'S THE WHITE COATING THAT COMES OFF MY TONGUE - +

This is the layer of bacteria and food particles that get stuck in the crevices of your tongue. Using a tongue scraper gently removes this coating.

WHAT IF I REMOVE A YELLOW, GREEN OR BROWN TONGUE COATING? - +

The colour of what comes off can vary according to your diet, lifestyle, and general oral hygiene. It may be may be white, yellow, green or brown.

In Ayurveda the appearance of the tongue provides important insight into one’s general health and is often used as a diagnosis tool.

If you consume a lot of sugar, carbs or alcohol, expect more of the mucus. If you have a virus, it might be towards the darker end of the scale. Yes, gross.

IF THIS IS SO GREAT, WHY HAVEN’T I HEARD OF IT BEFORE? - +

The Indian Ayurvedic gurus have been scraping for the past 2000 years, and tongue scraping remains very common in India. Alongside dry brushing and warm lemon water, it is part of a daily Ayurvedic cleansing routine.

With yoga and meditation paving the way, over the past few years interest in Ayurveda has been building in the West: more and more people are seeing the benefits of Eastern cleansing techniques for preserving optimal health and preventing disease.

In reality, tongue cleaning has been popular in most ancient cultures including Egypt, China...even Napolean had a tongue cleaner. At some point in modern history, it just fell out of fashion in the West.

WHY WILL THIS CHANGE MY LIFE? - +

Because tiny changes can lead to big shifts.

We have been using a tongue cleaner every day for the past 10 years.

Seeing that thick yellow-green-brown slime come off in the bathroom sink every morning, ultimately made us a whole lot more aware of what we were putting into our bodies.

This small good habit started to inspire other good habits, and in the end, it was the catalyst that helped us quit sugar, fall sick far less often and finally give priority to our health.

the cure to bad breath?

DOES TONGUE SCRAPING HELP WITH BAD BREATH? - +

Yes.

Most of the bacteria that causes bad breath live on the tongue.

So it’s a good idea to scrape any time that you’re looking to have uber attractive breath.

If you’ve eaten really strong stuff like garlic or onion, a tongue scraper will reduce the impact.

You can also scrape after you exercise, when a dry mouth can cause stale breath.

how to use & clean

USING A TONGUE CLEANER TAKES 10 SECONDS - +

Hold one end of the tongue cleaner in each hand and set the rounded part at the back of your tongue

Scrape the tongue from back to front applying light pressure.

Scrape down the middle and then each side a few times

Observe as you remove super gross yellow tongue slime every morning

Rinse with water after use.

Rub with salt and white vinegar when its starts to naturally oxidise if you want to keep it shiny.

Watch the video below or the (rather gross) demos in our Instagram stories to see how it's done!

HOW TO CLEAN MY TONGUE CLEANER - +

All you need to do is rinse your tongue cleaner for a few seconds like a toothbrush after each use. As copper is anti-microbial, any bacteria will be naturally eradicated on it's surface.

Our tongue cleaners are made of pure copper, which at some point will start to naturally oxidise. What to do? Embrace the imperfection. It's not rust, and it's not harmful, it's just a natural process and what will give your tongue cleaner its beautiful, unique look.

If you do want to keep it shiny and bright, rub a mixture of white vinegar and table salt onto the Tongue Cleaner with a cloth and rinse.

WHAT TIME OF DAY SHOULD I SCRAPE? - +

#Wakescrape.

Scrape before you drink or eat anything in the morning so you don’t re-ingest the built-up bacteria on your tongue.

Classic scraping scenario: roll out of bed, stumble to bathroom, take 5 seconds to scrape, then you’re done.

If you’re going for five-star oral hygiene, you can also scrape before going to bed at night. It can improve morning breath and remove bacteria that has built up during the day.

Any other time you sense you have bad breath - after sport, champagne, a plane trip or a stinky meal - you can use your tongue cleaner to improve your breath.

Yogis - you can integrate it into your cleansing, calming ritual before your practice.

American Dental Hygienists Association - +

We get it. We're skeptics too. If you're going to deep dive, allow us to show you the way:

Official recommendation of the American Dental Hygienists Association:

“Tongue deplaquing with tongue scrapers—tools exclusively designed for use on the tongue—is as essential for fresh breath as regular brushing. Tongue scrapers provide even pressure that forces bacteria, food debris and dead cells from the pits and crevices in the tongue that a toothbrush cannot remove.”

Interventions for managing halitosis, May 2016 - +

Interventions for managing halitosis, May 2016:

"It is now fairly widely accepted that halitosis originates from the oral cavity (Ayers 1998Delanghe 1997De Geest 2016). Accumulation of bacteria and food residues at the posterior part and in the furrows of the tongue (Seeman 2014van Steenberghe 1997) is considered to be the major cause (Scully 1997)...Reduction of the causative bacteria can also be accomplished through improving oral hygiene (Tonzetich 1978) in addition to cleaning of the tongue (Rosenberg 1996). This can be achieved by brushing or scraping the dorsum of the tongue to dislodge trapped food, cells, and bacteria from between the filiform papillae.

Frequency of Tongue Cleaning Impacts the Human Tongue Microbiome Composition, March 2019 - +

Frequency of Tongue Cleaning Impacts the Human Tongue Microbiome Composition and Enterosalivary Circulation of Nitrate01 March 2019:

"Tongue microbiome communities are of general interest in Eastern medicine because the appearance of the tongue coating is considered a manifestation of systemic health (Jiang et al., 2012a). In Western medicine interest has focused on the role of the microbiome in mucosal disorders (Docktor et al., 2012de Paiva et al., 2016), and in dentistry the tongue microbiome has significant associations with halitosis (Ren et al., 2016). Regular tongue cleaning is recommended by the American Dental Association (http://www.mouthhealthy.org) based on evidence that cleaning can reduce the severity of halitosis (Pedrazzi et al., 2016)... Based on this study, tongue cleaning assumes a new importance from the perspective of blood pressure regulation, as daily tongue cleaning appears to favor the increased abundance and metabolic activity of nitrate/nitrite metabolizing species, such as H. parainfluenza and commensal Neisseria spp. (Barth et al., 2009)."

Halitosis: From diagnosis to management, Jan - June 2013 - +

Halitosis: From diagnosis to management, Jan - June 2013:

"The number of bacterial species, which are found in oral cavity, are over 500, and most of them are capable to produce odorous compounds which can cause halitosis. In these conditions, poor oral hygiene plays a key factor for multiplication of halitosis causative bacteria and causes an increase in halitosis. These bacteria include especially Gr-negative species and proteolytic obligate anaerobes and they mainly retained in tongue coating and periodontal pockets. Among healthy individuals, with no history of halitosis and no periodontal diseases, some show halitosis because of retention of bacteria on the tongue surface. These bacteria degrade organic substrates (such as glucose, mucins, peptides, and proteins present in saliva, crevicular fluid, oral soft tissues, and retained debris) and produce odorous compounds."

A comparative trial employing a toothbrush and a tongue scraper, July 2004 - +

Tongue-cleaning methods: a comparative clinical trial employing a toothbrush and a tongue scraper. July 2004:

"It is estimated that approximately 85% of all halitosis cases have their origin within the mouth; of these, 50% are caused by tongue residues. Previous studies have established that hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans are the primary components of halitosis. Thus, tongue cleaning gains importance as a means of halitosis management."

WHAT YOU SCRAPE OFF IS DISGUSTING

As promised, what you scrape off your tongue is...disgusting. But it makes you understand how necessary it is and it quickly becomes addictive. Since I started, I forgot to do it one morning and I felt like I left my house without brushing my teeth.
