WHY SHOULD I CLEAN MY TONGUE? - +
There are hundreds of tiny lines running along the surface of your tongue where harmful bacteria hide out, feeding on food leftovers and dead cells. They have the most fun multiplying while you sleep, when there is less saliva in your mouth to wash them away.
That's why you wake up with your breath smelling so...unsexy. And with a gross white coating on your tongue.
Gently removing this coating with a tongue cleaner each morning is a basic step in assisting your body’s natural detoxification processes.
I BRUSH MY TONGUE, IS THIS ENOUGH? - +
Research has shown that scraping is much more effective than a toothbrush at removing tongue bacteria.
A toothbrush mostly just moves bacteria around on your tongue, instead of scraping it off.
Mouthwashes usually contain alcohol which mask breath for a short time, but then the alcohol dries out your mouth leading to worse breath. Some recent research suggests it can also kill off some of the good microbes hanging out in your mouth.
AREN'T THERE GOOD BACTERIA IN THE MOUTH? - +
Yes. Our oral microbiome is made up of good and bad bacteria. But an overgrowth of bad bacteria occurs when the mouth is dry.
OK so when is our mouth dry? When you smoke, drink alcohol, take certain medications, breath through the mouth a lot (eg while exercising) and...while we sleep!
This is why you tongue scrape once a day in the morning: because there is an accumulation of bad bacteria that grows on your tongue during the night when you have dry mouth - throwing the delicate balance between bad and good bacteria out of whack. Your body alerts you to this fact through.. your morning breath! All you have to do is listen :)
WHAT'S THE WHITE COATING THAT COMES OFF MY TONGUE - +
This is the layer of bacteria and food particles that get stuck in the crevices of your tongue. Using a tongue scraper gently removes this coating.
WHAT IF I REMOVE A YELLOW, GREEN OR BROWN TONGUE COATING? - +
The colour of what comes off can vary according to your diet, lifestyle, and general oral hygiene. It may be may be white, yellow, green or brown.
In Ayurveda the appearance of the tongue provides important insight into one’s general health and is often used as a diagnosis tool.
If you consume a lot of sugar, carbs or alcohol, expect more of the mucus. If you have a virus, it might be towards the darker end of the scale. Yes, gross.
IF THIS IS SO GREAT, WHY HAVEN’T I HEARD OF IT BEFORE? - +
The Indian Ayurvedic gurus have been scraping for the past 2000 years, and tongue scraping remains very common in India. Alongside dry brushing and warm lemon water, it is part of a daily Ayurvedic cleansing routine.
With yoga and meditation paving the way, over the past few years interest in Ayurveda has been building in the West: more and more people are seeing the benefits of Eastern cleansing techniques for preserving optimal health and preventing disease.
In reality, tongue cleaning has been popular in most ancient cultures including Egypt, China...even Napolean had a tongue cleaner. At some point in modern history, it just fell out of fashion in the West.
WHY WILL THIS CHANGE MY LIFE? - +
Because tiny changes can lead to big shifts.
We have been using a tongue cleaner every day for the past 10 years.
Seeing that thick yellow-green-brown slime come off in the bathroom sink every morning, ultimately made us a whole lot more aware of what we were putting into our bodies.
This small good habit started to inspire other good habits, and in the end, it was the catalyst that helped us quit sugar, fall sick far less often and finally give priority to our health.

Not another useless beauty tool
I can safely say that after 15 days of use, a tongue cleaner is not just another accessory that is going to weigh down your morning routine, far from it. It is indeed a life-changing object.

I GOT A HIGH FIVE FROM MY DENTIST
A strangely satisfying step in my routine. And I got a high five from my dentist who said my oral hygiene had never been better.

WHAT YOU SCRAPE OFF IS DISGUSTING
As promised, what you scrape off your tongue is...disgusting. But it makes you understand how necessary it is and it quickly becomes addictive. Since I started, I forgot to do it one morning and I felt like I left my house without brushing my teeth.
