Chewing gum 🍬 : good or bad for oral hygiene?

Let's get nerdy about chewing gum 🍬

.

So there’s definitely an argument to be made that chewing gum can get rid of plaque on your teeth 🦷 which is cool for dental hygiene. BUT:

.

SUGAR 🍭: Most chewing gum contains sugar so even if you remove existing plaque, you are essentially bathing your teeth in sugar which is going to lead to even more plaque later 🦠

.

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS 💀 : don’t get me started on artificial sweeteners which are mostly just weird franken(stein)food 🧟‍♀️

.

BLOATING 🤰: In Ayurveda, chewing gum is not recommended because it disturbs digestions. Excess chewing creates excess saliva, which sends a message to your stomach that you’re eating something. Enzymes and acids that digest food are released, except no food ever arrives 😢 Enter: a bloated stomach

.

So what to do? 🤷‍♀️

.

If you’re chewing gum to freshen your breath. Try: tongue cleaning (obvs 🙄), drinking water with fresh mint after a meal🌿, then chew on and eat the mint leaves. Holding a cucumber slice 🥒 between your tongue and the roof of the mouth for about 90 seconds will also get rid of some of the door-causing bacteria on your tongue.

.

And if you’re chewing gum just to keep your mouth busy (totally get it): then tea is a better friend, my friend 🍵

.

Gum rant finished. Over and out.✌️
