What is the Vata Dosha?

Dawson from Dawson's Creek. Charlotte from Sex & the City. Phoebe from Friends. Elmo from Sesame Street. The common thread apart from our questionable taste in TV? Yep, all Vatas.

THE AIRY ENERGY

Dawson from Dawson's Creek.
Charlotte from Sex & the City.
Phoebe from Friends.
Elmo from Sesame Street.

The common thread apart from our questionable taste in TV?

Yep, all Vatas.

So let's dive right in:

The characteristics of Vata

Body: a thin build, fine joints that *crack* a lot, with sub-par circulation so they are often cold, especially hands and feet. If 'look at my dead-person-hands' is a phrase you've used before in your life, our guess is you're a Vata.

Skin: thin skin, with a tendency to dry.

Digestion: Vatas have light digestive capacity. Overeating or improper food combining leads straight to bloat-city.

Personality: talkative, social, open, witty, enthusiastic, future-focused, full of ideas but easily distracted. Not super disciplined. LOVES a good day dream.

Work: creative, strategic and visionary who can easily see the bigger picture but who prefer thinking and communicating over action and execution. They can get bored quickly and are more satisfied working on multiple projects at the same time.

Vikriti (imbalance): trouble concentrating, indecision, anxiety, fatigue and insomnia, digestive problems, decreased libido.

Our advice

Movement:
A constantly-changing Vinyasa flow set to music will appeal to a Vata's creative side and help them stay in the moment.
Doing closed-eye yoga can also help Vatas focus inwards.
Vatas have trouble meditating because being in the present is uber difficult, as their mind often wanders to the future and 'what's next'. So moving meditation can be more effective, by walking or even dancing.

Food:
Don't skip breakfast! Vatas need to stay grounded with small regular meals. If not, you’ll be a sugar-craving wiry maniac by 4pm. Coffee = anxiety. It's not your greatest ally.
Go for warming dishes such as curry, dahl, ratatouille, beef bourguignon etc. If you're not vegetarian, "bone broth" is a magic elixir for Vatas: it's super nourishing, helps digestion, plumps the skin and strengthens the hair.
Vatas find it hard to drink the required 1.5-2L of water a day. Think of creative ways to get it down or say hello to premature winkles #sorry.

Lifestyle:
Vatas respond well to regularity, zen vibes and stability.
Try to go to bed early: Vatas need their full 8 hours or they're barely functional the next day. The hours pre-midnight are worth even more than those post-midnight, so 10pm would be a perfect bedtime in a perfect world. To come back to earth after a busy day, turn off your screens and allow yourself time in the evenings to read, listen to calm music, burn incense and take a break from artificial light.
