Vata, Pitta, Kapha, what are the 3 doshas?
THE 3 DOSHAS
The three Doshas, those mysterious forces that form the basis of Ayurvedic theory.
So, what are they exactly?
Doshas are forces of energy, that are made up of combinations of the natural elements: air, ether (space), fire, water and earth.
These forces of energy, are present everywhere: in the natural cycles of the day, in the seasons, in the cycles of our lives...as well as internally, in our bodies and minds.
Let's break it down:
VATA (air + ether)
An energy of movement, changeability, coldness & dryness - like the wind
People born with a lot of Vata in the body have light and slender bones, are lanky, have dry skin, and are often cold
Open, spiritual, creative, strategic, future-focused, full of ideas but easily distracted. Prone to anxiousness
CYCLE OF LIFE
From 50+ Vata increases in the body and mind, it is the age of wisdom and spaciousness, dryness also increases
Autumn to early Winter, dry climates and windy autumns increase Vata
2 p.m. to 6 p.m. - the time of day to dedicate to creativity & 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. - the moment of REM sleep and dreams
PITTA (fire + water)
The energy of transformation and action - like fire
Toned, proportioned and builds muscle easily, skin prone to redness and inflammation, people with a lot of Pitta are often hot and drink lots of water
Determined, competitive, ambitious, in the moment. Natural leaders. Prone to anger and impatience
CYCLE OF LIFE
From 20-50yrs old is the Pitta phase of life: full of action and activity in career, family, social life
Summer, hot climates increase Pitta
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. - the most active part of the day, all about 'doing.' Our metabolism reaches its peak at noon &
10 p.m. to 2 a.m. - the time the body processes food and thoughts of the day
KAPHA (water + earth)
The energy that builds structure and brings nourishment - like when you water the earth
Strong build, sturdy bone structure, puts on weight more easily than other Doshas, cool thick skin and thick hair
Patience, fidelity, stability, sensitivity, empathy, compassion, holds onto the past, a sponge for other people's feelings. Prone to sadness, laziness
CYCLE OF LIFE
Childhood, the time we build our foundations and nourish our growth
Late Winter to early Spring, wet and foggy winters increase Kapha
6 a.m. to 10 a.m. - the moment when everything is slow and the world wakes up and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. - the sun sets and the world slows down again
"THEY ALL SOUND LIKE ME"
Recognise a bit of yourself in each one? All good, that's normal. We each have the three doshas in all of us, but to varying degrees.
Your Prakriti : the dominant dosha you are born with. Your natural state.
Your Vikriti: any doshic imbalances you are currently experiencing. Because of your lifestyle, the season, your age etc.
